WSP to provide engineering services for PEI waste processing facility

WSP, a Montreal-headquartered engineering and consulting firm, has won a contract to provide technical and engineering services for Enwave Energy Corporation’s waste processing facility in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The new, expanded facility will replace the current system, which is nearing the end of its service life.

WSP will provide engineering across all disciplines, as well as permit and construction support. The firm also delivered preliminary engineering consulting before the project was approved.

“Waste-to-energy solutions are one of the many innovative ways that communities can power themselves towards a cleaner, most sustainable energy future. By expanding the previous system that was in place, the city is giving itself the opportunity to fuel its future growth and improve its energy resilience,” said Rehan Wasti, EVP for energy, resources and industry, WSP Canada.

The expanded waste processing facility will nearly double the capacity of the existing system and will help divert up to 49,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually. The facility is projected to create up to 908,000 tons of CO2 emissions savings by 2052 – or the equivalent of taking 278,000 cars off the road.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project is expected to take place in fall 2025. The Enwave facility is expected to be in operation in 2028.

WSP has more than 73,000 professionals globally, including 13,000 in Canada. The firm provides engineering, science, and advisory services for projects in transportation, infrastructure, environment, buildings, energy, water, and mining and metals.

WSP earlier this year appointed former McKinsey senior partner Eric Lamarre as a board director.
