WSP wins design contract for Eglinton Crosstown West Extension in Toronto

WSP, a Montreal-headquartered engineering and consulting firm, has won a contract to provide design services for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension light rail development in Toronto.

The consultancy has been named primary lead designer for the project’s stations, rail, and systems contract. WSP will lead design as part of the Trillium Rail Partners consortium, which includes construction team members Amico Major Projects, Alberici Constructors, and Acciona Infrastructure Canada.

The 9.2-kilometer extension of the Eglinton Crosstown West will run from Weston Road to Renforth Drive and will operate mainly underground. The line will serve an estimated 69,7000 daily rides.

Plans are also being explored to extend the line another five kilometers to Pearson airport.

The extension project broke ground in 2022 and has an estimated completion date of 2031.

The main Eglinton Crosstown West project has been delayed several times. It has been under construction since 2011.

The Trillium Rail Partners contract for the extension includes stations (one at-grade, two elevated, and four underground), track construction, electrification, communication, signaling and train control systems, tunnel and elevated guideway fit out, and tunnel ventilation.

“We are proud to be part of a project that, once complete, will make it easier for thousands of people in the Greater Toronto Area get to the places and people they value most,” said Corina Moore, EVP, transportation and infrastructure, WSP Canada.

WSP’s rail and transit practice has offerings in advisory, project delivery, systems design and engineering, civil works, and specialist services.

WSP has approximately 73,000 professionals globally, including 13,000 in Canada. The firm provides engineering, science, and advisory services for projects in transportation, infrastructure, environment, buildings, energy, water, and mining and metals.

WSP earlier this year won a contract to provide technical and engineering services for Enwave Energy Corporation’s waste processing facility in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
