Design and engineering consultancy Aecom has hired Eric Leitner as digital leader of its Canadian building and places practice.

In his new role at Aecom’s Ottawa office, Leitner will help the firm’s building and places clients bridge the gap between infrastructure and technology with the right digital tools and solutions.

Leitner brings more than 30 years of experience in building information modeling (BIM), virtual design construction (VDC), and project management. He has deep expertise in facilities management, building sciences, and other aspects of building design and construction.

“At AECOM, we’re constantly investing in our digital capabilities to deliver faster, smarter, and better options to support our clients’ needs. As a trusted advisor and digital expert to the architecture, engineering, and construction industry for many years, we’re thrilled to have Eric at the helm of this initiative,” said Walter Gaudet, senior vice president and lead of Aecom’s Canadian buildings and places business.

Leitner’s notable project work includes advising the RCMP on a large space inventory project; creating a digital twin for the Warsaw Road Swing Bridge in Ontario; and leveraging LiDAR scanning, geolocation, and other technologies to modernize models on the Singapore Marina Bay Formula 1 Grand Prix racetrack.

Leitner joins Aecom from Colliers Project leaders, where he was a senior project manager in the federal business unit. Before that, he held BIM and VDC manager roles at SNC-Lavalin, Modern Niagara, and CIMA+.

“Being a part of the Digital AECOM team and working to tailor its vast offering of innovative products and digital services to respond to the specific needs of each client is very exciting,” Leitner said. “I look forward to collaborating with AECOM colleagues across the globe who understand both the urgency of the challenges facing the industry today and our responsibility to assist in an impactful and enduring way.”

Aecom recently won a contract to develop an environmental master plan for Toronto Pearson International Airport.
