Westhoff Engineering Resources, a Calgary-based engineering consultancy focusing on water resource management, has been acquired by CIMA+, a Laval, QC-headquartered design and engineering consulting firm.

Founded in 1996, Westhoff Engineering provides engineering and environmental services for water resource projects, from planning and design to construction, inspections, and auditing. The boutique firm’s team of engineers and biologists have particular expertise working on innovative approaches to stormwater management, including wetland and stormwater integration, low-impact development, and modeling to design and evaluate drainage systems.

Demand for innovative stormwater solutions is increasing as infrastructure ages, urban communities densify, and climate change increases storm intensity and flood risks.

“At CIMA+, we have a keen understanding of the value of water and its importance to our infrastructure,” said Steeve Fiset, chief strategy officer, CIMA+. “By joining forces with the water management experts at Westhoff, we will grow our capacity to provide innovative solutions that accommodate sustainable land development and population growth, while protecting existing communities and our natural environment.”

The acquisition will grow CIMA+’s Western Canada presence, as well as its environmental capabilities nationwide. The firm has Alberta offices in Calgary and Edmonton, as well as four locations in BC and two in Saskatchewan.

“Clients will now have access to a wider array of expertise and services under one banner, thanks to our newly expanded team in the Calgary region,” said Kelly Yuzdepski, EVP, Western Canada, CIMA+. “The water resource management market is one of the fastest growing fields of engineering in Canada, and indeed throughout North America.”

The deal builds on CIMA+’s May acquisition of Ediom, a boutique Toronto-area electrical engineering firm.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to provide outstanding engineering and environmental solutions, we are excited to be joining the CIMA+ team, with its shared culture and values,” said Karen Oldershaw, senior biologist, Westhoff Engineering Resources. “By leveraging our firms’ complementary strengths, we can add value for clients through a wider range of service offerings.”

CIMA+ was founded in 1990 and provides engineering, environmental and geotechnical, geomatics and surveying, and project management services for buildings, infrastructure, and transportation. The firm also offers complementary specialized services in urban planning and landscape architecture, software development, sustainability, commissioning, and intelligent and mobility systems, among others.

CIMA+ has more than 2,800 employees across 30+ offices in Canada, as well as five international locations in Africa.
