MNP named a Best Employer in Canada for 11th year in a row
Calgary-based accounting and consulting firm MNP LLP has been recognized as a Best Employer in Canada for the 11th year running. The ranking, conducted by Aon, highlights the top Canadian companies in terms of employee engagement, effective leadership, and performance culture.
Founded in 1958, MNP, formerly Meyers Norris Penny, is Canada’s fifth largest national accounting and consulting firm. The firm has 4,300 employees in over 70 offices stretching across the country. In addition to audit and tax, MNP provides a range of consulting services, including business strategy, performance improvement, human resources, and technology offerings.
Through an effective campaign of organic growth and strategic M&A activity, the firm has built up the highest year-over-year growth rates of any Canadian top accounting firm. The growing Calgary-based accounting and consulting network made two acquisitions in Ontario this fall, absorbing Kingston accountancy Collins Blay and Ottawa-based public sector consultancy 4Plan Consulting. The moves followed MNP’s acquisition of Collins Barrow KMD in January – which incorporated the embattled network’s Arkona, Clinton, London, Stratford, and Strathroy offices.
Aside from being a fast-growing firm, MNP is also apparently a great place to work. The company was selected as one of Canada’s Best Employers 2019, reaching the ranking for the 11th consecutive year. Conducted by HR consulting giant Aon, the annual survey recognizes Canadian companies that have great work environments.
Utilizing extensive polling of leaders, HR heads, and employees, the survey determines how employees feel about the companies they work for, centrally measuring ‘engagement,’ which evaluates employee motivation and how likely they are to stay with the company. Aon’s ranking draws on data from over 9,000 organizations in 68 industries, including over 734,000 employees and more than 500 companies of all sizes in Canada.
MNP was part of the Gold Winners level in the ‘Large Companies’ division, alongside Cintas Canada, Colliers International – Canada, LoyaltyOne, and Clark Builders Group. Gold winning companies ranked in the 67%-75% percentile of all companies Aon surveyed. The Platinum Winners circle – which ranked in the top 25th percentile – included notable firms like Edward Jones, Intact Financial, SAP Canada, and Marriott Hotels.
MNP credits its ‘Different by Design’ approach for creating a consistently positive work environment. “Different by Design is a philosophy that is deeply rooted in our culture,” commented Karen Cooper, MNP’s VP of Human Resources. “MNPers are as diverse and unique as the communities we live in and the clients we serve. Our team members have given us the perspectives, insights, and ideas that have helped us to become the fastest growing national professional services firm in Canada."
“As an entrepreneurial firm, we never set limits on what can be achieved, or which direction team members want to take their career," she added.
According to the firm, MNP supports its employees with a balanced lifestyle approach, which creates a flexible, fun, and rewarding workplace. The company also invests in local communities with volunteer efforts and sponsorships, strengthening a corporate social responsibility aspect that employees find increasingly important.
The accounting and consulting firm performed especially strongly in the survey categories of collaboration, work tasks, and employment brand.
"We are exceptionally proud to have our firm recognized,” said Jason Tuffs, MNP Chairman and CEO. “This award highlights that through our commitment to our people, we continue to stand apart when it comes to attracting and retaining both team members and clients."
