Alvarez & Marsal hires Maisam Raza to lead new alternative investment practice in Canada
Alvarez & Marsal, a New York-headquartered management consulting firm, has hired Maisam Raza as a senior director and leader of its newly launched Canadian alternative investment services practice within its global valuation services line.
Based in Toronto, Raza brings more than 12 years of financial services industry experience. He specializes in providing valuation and monitoring advisory services for illiquid securities and private assets to institutional investors, including large pension funds, private equity firms, and insurance clients. His experience includes the valuation of private credit, equity, and other asset classes common to private capital investment strategies.
Raza joins A&M from private credit manager Golub Capital, where he spent nearly four years and was a portfolio manager leading the credit monitoring and valuation function in Canada, Before that, he spent six years with KPMG, where he was a senior manager providing valuation advisory services for private debt and derivatives.
Raza has a master’s degree in finance from the University of Toronto, a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Waterloo, and a bachelor of laws from King’s College London in the UK.
“Heightened market volatility and increased scrutiny around valuation governance – particularly for portfolios of illiquid assets – are reshaping expectations for asset managers,” Raza said. “As valuation cycles accelerate, firms must enhance transparency and strengthen processes. At the same time, technology is both a challenge and a powerful opportunity. A&M’s integrated platform and holistic, operational mindset uniquely position the firm to help clients navigate these complexities.”
A&M in 2024 expanded its tax group into Canada and in 2023 expanded its transaction advisory group into the country.
“Our market-leading platform is a core growth pillar for the Global Valuation Services practice,” said Matthew Goldberg, managing director and head of US alternative investment services, A&M. “Expanding into Canada with top talent aligns with our firm’s broader market momentum and our strategy to address the increasingly complex valuation needs of sophisticated asset managers.”
A&M has more than 11,500 employees across 90+ offices globally providing advisory, business performance improvement, and turnaround management services.
