AtkinsRéalis wins design contract for Highway 27 widening in Vaughan

AtkinsRéalis, a Montreal-based design and engineering consultancy, has won a contract with York Region to provide design and engineering services for the Highway 27 widening project in Vaughan, ON.

The project – which aims to reduce congestion by widening the road from two to four lanes between Major Mackenzie Drive and Nashville Road – also includes the addition of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Highway 27 connects Barrie to communities northwest of Toronto with the rest of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with links to Highways 401, 407, and 427. The road has been seeing increased congestion as GTA sprawl and population growth continues to tick up.

GTA commuters spend an average of 98 hours in rush hour traffic annually, with traffic congestion costing the region nearly $45 billion every year.

As part of the Highway 27 contract, AtkinsRéalis will provide detail design, contract administration, and inspection services. Other services will include design of sidewalks, cycle tracks, and multi-use pathways; evaluation and rehabilitation or replacement design of the Humber River bridge north of Major Mackenzie Drive; and design of retaining walls and noise barriers.

“With a track record of delivering road and highway projects across Canada and around the world, we’re bringing our world class expertise and local insights to York Region,” said Stéphanie Vaillancourt, president, Canada, AtkinsRéalis. “The local team will provide on-the-ground know-how with support from our national and international specialists.”

AtkinsRéalis has worked on numerous other congestion-relieving road projects in the York and Peel regions. The firm also has a materials testing lab in Vaughan that supports road infrastructure work throughout the GTA.
