Sapling Financial Consultants announces new hires and promotions
Sapling Financial Consultants, a boutique Toronto financial consulting firm, has hired Morné Viljoen as senior engagement manager and Chris Vyse as contract VP for sales, and promoted Dave O’Brien to engagement manager.
Viljoen joins Sapling from PwC, where he was an assurance senior manager. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Peoria South Africa and is a chartered professional accountant.
Vyse brings 40+ years of experience building relationships in the high tech and HR technology industries. He retired in 2022 from full-time work after 15 years with O.C. Tanner Canada, a provider of HR software.
O’Brien has been at Sapling for two years, joining the firm in January 2022 as a consultant. He was previously a senior property accountant at Colliers International and a senior accountant at Stern Cohen LLP. O’Brien has a master’s degree in finance and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wilfrid Laurier University. He also holds chartered professional accountant and financial modeling & valuation analyst certifications.
Founded in 2015 by Rob Hong and Andreea Lupascu, Sapling was created to provide financial modeling to small and mid-market businesses in Canada. The firm now provides data analytics, interim FP&A, and financial due diligence services to midmarket clients across Canada and the US.
Sapling recorded 45 percent growth between 2022 and 2023, and has a three-year growth plan that includes service diversification, team expansion, and the launch of satellite offices in the US. The firm is also planning to expand its Toronto office in the coming months and launch a new website.
“We’re thrilled to highlight recent milestones and exceptional team members driving our success across North America. With a team of 22, our ongoing growth reflects our commitment and diligence,” Hong said.
Hong previously was a senior consultant at KPMG and an associate portfolio manager at Artemis Investment Management. Lupascu was previously an academic physicist, completing a doctorate in experimental condensed matter at the University of Toronto before transitioning to finance.
