MNP, a national mid-market accountancy, has acquired Baker Tilly’s Sarnia practice, effective November 1.

As part of the transaction, Scott Dawson and Giovanni Spadafora have joined MNP’s existing Sarnia office as partners, along with a team of five colleagues.

Dawson previously spent 12 years at Baker Tilly Sarnia, latterly serving as a manager. Spadafora spent 16 years at Baker Tilly Sarnia, latterly as a senior manager.

Baker Tilly Canada’s network (formerly Collins Barrow) is a co-operative of independent accounting firms, making it a simpler process for constituent practices to leave if they so desire. RSM Canada, for example, was largely formed from Collins Barrow Toronto, as well as several Collins Barrow firms in Alberta.

“Southwestern Ontario boasts a strong manufacturing sector, rich agricultural lands, and proximity to the US border, making the region a vitally important part of Ontario’s economy. We’ve been proud to be part of the Sarnia community since 2018 and are excited to be furthering our commitment to the area at a time when we can help businesses across the region prosper in an uncertain environment,” said Jared Bourne, MNP’s regional managing partner for Southwestern Ontario.

Founded in 1958 and headquartered in Calgary, MNP has more than 60 offices in Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada. The firm has more than 7,000 people in 125 locations nationwide.

MNP last year acquired Bailey Kearney Ferguson, a boutique accountancy based in Wallaceburg, ON, and in 2021 acquired MacAlpine and Company, a Woodstock, ON-based accountancy.

“We are known across the communities we work with as being one of Canada’s most-trusted accounting, tax, and business consulting firms, so we are excited to welcome Scott, Giovanni, and their very well-respected team into the MNP family,” Bourne added.
