KPI Mining Solutions, the mining sector software division of IT consultancy KPI Digital, has announced a partnership with Mila, the world’s largest academic deep learning (DL) research centre.

KPI Mining focuses on developing and commercializing AI-based solutions for mining production planning optimization. The division’s technologies are developed in partnership with McGill-Cosmo Stochastic Mine Planning Laboratory and its global consortium of mining companies – including Anglo American/De Beers, Newmont, and Vale.

"Our underlying technologies are focused on stochastic orebody modeling and stochastic optimization. We deliver integrated simultaneous (mines to products to markets) AI + Operations Research (OR) optimization models, dealing with multiple uncertainties,” said Benny Cohen, president of KPI Mining Solutions. “Our collaboration with Mila enables us to leverage and enhance the power of AI in our software."

The collaboration between KPI Mining and Mila will focus on creating more advanced DL and OR models to improve existing and future software.

“Critical minerals play a crucial role in driving the electric vehicle transition and supporting the climate agenda and AI has proven to be an important technology in the support of Canada's Critical Mineral Strategy,” said Stéphane Létourneau, EVP of Mila. “With this partnership, we aim to further develop AI and ML modeling that will generate advances in mining efficiency, both reducing the environmental impact of mining and supporting Canada's strategy in this sector.”

Mila was in 2017 established as a non-profit organization by the Université de Montréal, McGill University, École Polytechnique de Montréal, and HEC Montréal. The AI research institute has more than 1,000 researchers focusing on machine learning.

KPI Digital is headquartered in Montreal and provides consulting in data, analytics, AI, digital experience, and enterprise performance management to clients in 15 industries. The firm has 37 employees listed on LinkedIn.
