HKA ranks as platinum player in Top 100 public infrastructure projects
HKA – a risk and disputes consulting firm – ranked as a platinum player (10-19 projects) in the 2023 edition of Top100 Projects.
Published annually since 2006 by ReNew Canada Magazine, Top100 Projects profiles the 100 largest public infrastructure projects across the country and showcases the key players working on them. Platinum elite players supported 20+ projects, while platinum players worked on 10-19 projects, gold players worked on 6-9, silver worked on 3-5, and bronze worked on 1-2.
The platinum elite group included the typical large AEC firms, including SNC-Lavalin, WSP, Stantec, Jacobs, and Aecom. Consulting firms included Deloitte, EY, and Aon.
Joining HKA in the platinum tier were law firms such as Dentons and Norton Rose Fulbright, as well as engineering consultancies such as GHD and Dillon Consulting.
To determine the top 100 projects, ReNew uses confirmed project costs. Projects must also be in active procurement, assessment, design, and/or construction.
“The value of the Top100 Projects rose to a record high of $273 billion in 2022, and it held steady in 2023 despite changes to the list,” said John Tenpenny, editor of ReNew Canada. “The list turned over 10 projects, nine of which were due to substantial completion being reached, with one project—the Calgary Event Centre—being canceled. Nine new projects made their first appearance in the report, while Metro Vancouver’s North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant returned after a one-year hiatus with a new construction management team.”
The 10 new projects in the 2023 ranking totaled approximately $9 billion. Eight were in the building development category, while two were water/wastewater projects.
The transit sector accounted for a quarter of projects, valued at $120.6 billion, followed by the energy sector (11 projects, $50.7 billion), the buildings sector (31 projects, $45.6 billion), and the transportation sector (18 projects, $27.3 billion).
HKA worked on three projects in top 10 by value, and on 13 projects overall in the top 100. The three HKA-supported projects in the top 10 were the top-ranked Site C Clean Energy Project ($16 billion, Fort St. John, BC); fifth-ranked Eglinton Crosstown LRT ($12.6 billion, Toronto, ON), and 10th-place Réseau express métropolitain ($6.9 billion, Montreal, QC).
HKA provides risk mitigation and dispute resolution consulting within the capital projects and infrastructure sector. The firm also advises clients on the economic impact of commercial and investment treaty disputes, forensic accounting, and complex government contracting matters.
