Stantec buys Texas-based Cox McLain Environmental Consulting
Stantec, an Edmonton-headquartered engineering and design consultancy, has acquired Cox McLain Environmental Consulting (CMEC), an Austin, Texas-headquartered full-service environmental consulting firm.
Founded in 2007, CMEC provides advisory services in environmental compliance and planning, regulatory compliance and environmental clearance, historical preservation and archeology, and specialized environmental services for the energy industry. The firm has worked on thousands of environmental and cultural resource projects with government agencies, private land developers, energy firms, and national engineering firms.
CMEC has approximately 70 professionals across offices in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Washington, DC.
Stantec’s acquisition of CMEC will strengthen the firm’s environmental services practice in the US South. The deal, for which terms were not disclosed, will give Stantec its first locations in Oklahoma – with new offices in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.“CMEC will strengthen our expertise, geographic depth, and service offerings for our clients, especially within the environmental, natural resources, energy services, transportation, and cultural resources markets,” said Gord Johnston, president and CEO of Stantec. “CMEC has exceptional senior leadership and talented technical staff that add new skillsets to our Environmental Services team which can be leveraged across the organization.”
The CMEC deal follows a series of investments in Stantec’s environmental services practice. The firm in 2021 acquired the North American and Asia-Pacific businesses of Cardno, adding approximately 2,750 professionals in the US and Australia. Stantec in 2020 acquired Wenck, a Maple Plain, Minnesota-based environmental engineering firm with 300 people.
Stantec also in 2021 bought California-based Paleo Solutions and Netherlands-based Driven by Values – two environmental services firms.
“With Stantec’s passion for supporting local communities and global resources, this acquisition offers tremendous opportunities for our employees and clients as we work to find the balance between modernizing infrastructure and protecting environmental resources,” said Ashley McLain, president and CEO of CMEC.
Stantec has more than 22,000 employees globally and annual revenue of US$3.26 billion.
