PwC Canada donates $250K to support new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital
In the spirit of holiday giving, accounting and consulting firm PwC Canada has donated a quarter-million dollars to Mackenzie Health Foundation Hospital.
With a fast-growing population of 500,000 in southwest York Region, the city of Vaughan, Ontario will soon be getting its first modern hospital. Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital is slated to open in late 2020, and will have 342 beds, 1,800 full-time staff, and 100 specialist physicians.
The 1.2 million square foot facility will be Canada’s first smart hospital, and will give York Region patients a 68% increase in available beds, more care opportunities, an estimated intake of 100,000 annual emergency visits, and increased capacity for surgery.
Following a recommendation from a Deloitte Consulting report in 2008, a site on the Highway 400 corridor was chosen, and an 82-acre portion of Canada’s Wonderland amusement park property was purchased for $60 million. The overall hospital construction project is expected to cost $1.6 billion.
While funding is arriving from municipal and provincial coffers, community contributions are also playing a large role in the hospital’s construction. The Mackenzie Health Foundation’s fundraising campaign “Ultimate” is the largest ever for a community hospital in Canada, with a goal of $250 million. Major contributions thus far include $10 million from auto parts maker Magna International, $15 million from the De Gasperis and Muzzo families, $10 million from businessman Vic de Zen, $5 million from former politician Greg Sorbara, and $40 million from the Cortellucci family.
PwC Canada recently contributed a $250,000 cheque to the campaign during the grand opening of its new GTA North office, located at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre. A number of politicians, including the Mayor of Vaughan and several provincial and federal members of parliament, were on hand to tour the new office and witness the cheque presentation.
"As we open our new PwC office in Vaughan, we are thrilled that we can contribute to the future and health of York Region," said Frank Magliocco, managing partner, York region, and national real estate leader, PwC Canada. "Mackenzie Health is a pillar of the community as they build the first hospital in York Region in the past 30 years. As the community continues to grow, the need for access to healthcare is more important than ever."
Mary-Agnes Wilson, EVP, COO and chief nursing executive at Mackenzie Health, said, "At every level of their organization, PwC Canada has made a financial contribution to help build and equip the new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital. We are grateful for PwC's partnership and investment in bringing the ultimate in health care to our community."
